What is the mission of World of Good, Inc.?
World of Good, Inc. was founded in 2004 to create sustainable, enterprise-based solutions to global poverty alleviation. Through a series of strategic relationships with online and offline retail partners, we create opportunities for thousands of marginalized artisans around the world to gain access to a rapidly growing segment of consumers who are looking to make informed, educated, and socially-responsible decisions when they shop.

Who founded World of Good? And Why?
World of Good was started in Berkeley, California by Priya Haji and Siddharth Sanghvi, two friends who graduated from the University of California Berkeley Business School. Priya, who is now World of Good's CEO, travelled around the world in her first year out of Haas, meeting with small artisan producer groups all over Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Inspired by what she saw, and convinced that she could help figure out a way for them to gain more, better, and faster access to the U.S. consumer market, she came back and convinced her friend Siddharth to quit his tech job and start World of Good.

That was four years ago. Since then, and in keeping with our original mission to create new distribution channels for our artisan partners overseas, we have grown to become nationally distributed company-both online and offline-and are currently supporting the work of artisans in more than 70 countries around the world.

How is World of Good, Inc. structured?
World of Good, Inc. is comprised of three core businesses:

Is World of Good a nonprofit?
No. World of Good, Inc. is a for-profit enterprise that relies on consumer markets to drive revenue. World of Good, Inc. has an independently-run, sister nonprofit organization, WorldofGood.org, that works to inspire institutional, industry-wide changes that make substantial progress towards alleviating global poverty. World of Good, Inc. partially funds the work of the nonprofit through 5% of the founder's equity, a commitment to donate 10% of annual profits, and periodic company-sponsored fundraisers and events. Unlike other hybrid-enterprises, however, WorldofGood.org pursues independent funding for its work through private and corporate foundations, and individual grants.

How do Original Good products help women around the world?
Sixty to seventy percent of the artisans making fair trade handcrafted products are women. Often these women are mothers and the sole wage earners in the family. A lot of these products allow the women to work on a very flexible schedule and to capitalize on the limited resources at hand e.g. they can make beautiful crafts from grass and twigs (woven baskets), dirt (clay pots), and from trash (recycled bottlecap purses!).

Through their work in fair trade craft production, women not only improve the lives of their families, but improve their own lives as well. Many women artisans report that their work has given them self esteem and the opportunity to participate in decision making in their communities. Increased income ensures better nutrition, better schooling for their children, and an improvement in housing and living standards. One of the biggest challenges these women face is gaining access to larger, more stable consumer markets. World of Good serves as a bridge for these women to connect with retailers and consumers in the US.

How do you guarantee that the producers are treated well and will really benefit?
World of Good goes through a rigorous process when partnering with new producer groups, and we follow fair trade principles in all our activities.

  1. We only work with producer groups that are mission driven and focused on improving the lives of the artisan communities. All of our partners are affiliated with larger social and economic development programs like international fair trade organizations, Peace Corps, United Nations Development Program and/or micro-enterprise programs. We verify the practices of each producer group through one of these partner organizations, or when possible through an on-site visit.
  2. We then screen each individual product to assess for the environmental footprint, the production process, the compensation to the artisans, and the overall benefit to the community.

How does World of Good actually help these organizations?
After we screen the organization and their practices and accept the producer group as a partner, we focus on working with the producer group according to fair trade principles. We are a member of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT), and adhere to their Ten Standards of Fair Trade. World of Good's ethical sourcing practices include:

In addition to all of these commitments World of Good donates 10% of our profits to WorldofGood.org, which awards development grants to improve the lives of the artisans and their families in producer communities.
